We are told that a senatorship is the highest honor we can receive from our Jaycee chapters. But it's more than that. It's not just about the chapter, it's about the Jaycee friends you worked next to in the heat or rain trying to raise money so your chapter can sponsor the local July 4th fireworks display; buying gifts and food so a family can have a Christmas celebration they could not normally afford to have; or running a food drive for the local food bank.
The Florida Senate just celebrated their 40th Anniversary back in February. Stories were told and memories were relived as senators from across the state attended. For many of them, their involvement in the Jaycees and the Senate created life-changing moments. We were very fortunate to have the 1st FL JCI President, Randy Avon, as our guest speaker. Just imagine the stories he was able to share with us about his Jaycee and Senate careers.
Just recently, I was given a copy of the senatorship application and letters of recommendation that were submitted on my behalf back in 1994. As I was reading through it, my eyes started tearing up because of what was written in the letters from my chapter president and other senators. What made these letters so special was that these individuals were also my friends and they were writing about what I meant to them and to the chapter. And do you know that they are still my friends? That’s the beauty of the Jaycees and the Senates…countless friends that make a difference in your life.
I’m asking you to dig out the copy of your senatorship nomination and read it again. At the same time, dig out your “black badge” and find out what it means to get involved with the Florida Senate. While you’re at it, talk to the active senators and find out why they stay involved and what the senate organization means to them.
Since we can’t turn back time and the time that we do have is so precious, isn’t it important to enjoy time with your friends and be involved in an organization that has so much to offer on a state, national and international level?
Your 2010 - 2011 Senate board is currently working on our 1st Quarter Meeting in Daytona Beach on August 13 - 15, a Chapter Service Center Work Day on August 28 and our annual Florida Bash on October 1 - 3 in Davenport, FL. We are trying to keep our events as economical as possible, but at the same time, still providing you with a fun-filled atmosphere.
I am asking everyone to say “YES” and join us at our events. Bring along your memories and share your stories with us. We also need your ideas for new and different activities for the Senate to participate in.
There is an old saying we used in my home chapter of Palmetto… “You can only fail if you don’t try.” Now is the time to try your “New Beginnings” in the Florida Senate.
In JCI Spirit
Larry Ackerman
#51468 President
